Benidorm half-marathon (Benidorm, Spain) (2022/03/05): 1:36:56
Total 214, Place 8, Age category 1 đđ„
Supposedly A-race for halfmarathon this year. Landed in Alicante with major pain in left ankle, barely able to walk for a day. Better after one rest day. Tried to get used to the sun again, but the rain was planned for this evening race... So much for a change from the freezing cold at home. New plan: get around the route without bringing back the pain.
Saturday morning jog done. Waited all day. Tram to the start. Bib pickup. Short walk to check the start and end of the route. And long wait... Not used at all for such evening race.
Finally got ready around 6pm. Dropped my bag. Shaked the legs (or more like "did my first run outside with my magic racing shoes, used only twice before on the treadmill..."). Not much of a warmup really, but this is never my speciality. There are at least 10km to warmup later on...
A bit before 6:30pm. All headed to the start boxes. Always tricky (pace wise) with a mix start 10K and half-marathon. Perfect corral, right behind the elites. Countdown started. What a bless! And hop! Start was given, all runners just rushed down the slope. I tried to contain the pace for not falling. After getting early the first kilometer at sub90-pace (which was the plan)... I felt it was well enough đ€Ł Just ran by feel. The straight line along the beach front was nice, but felt longer. Turned to the next street, got passed by a gal. I kept her in sight, would pass her later in the race. Not liking much the slow slope towards km6.5, pace dropped. Tried to catch up on the way down, helped by the 10K- runners who accelerated to finish their race. Had counted the gals in front of me, tried to not be passed by the ones running the half. Got the first 10km in 45 minutes exactly, which meant slow, but comfortable enough to keep up to the end. After halfway, the route takes darker streets and along the beach front, with poor lightning. Could pass three gals in the darkness of the km12-15. Yeaaah! Loved the "tchong" of my Adidas Adios Pro 2 (maybe I should have run more than twice with them before, and at least once outside...). Still strong on the way back to the other beach side. Final 3km, and I passed the lady who came 2nd in AG. Felt like I was accelerating during those 3 last kilometers, passing guys (not many, but 4 or 6), getting cheering from spectators, tried to smile on all the photos, even the ones on the finish line at the top of the little slope (I think...). Done!
Luckily, the weather was nice, no wind, and no rain.
Nothing crazy. Enough left in the tank at the end. Endurance is there. Where is the speed??? At least I got first in my age category, giving me a nice trophy đđ„
Good Saturday night run in little Manhattan.
The season had officially started. Next!
