The day of days. Our first match in a country other than Sweden. A late afternoon kick-off in the dying sun, but as the sun went down the action ramped right up.
With the injured duo of Rami and Tushar taking on coaching roles, SCBC began the game in an untested 3-5-2 formation (which, in hindsight, was perhaps a wild decision). ACJV were on the attack for most of the first 20 minutes of the game, and found themselves 2-0 up at half-time. In truth it could have easily been 3-0 if not for an inexplicably fortunate free-kick save moments before half-time. Whilst SCBC enjoyed some time on the ball in the latter part of the half (having changed formation) they left the pitch deservedly behind.
The second half was a different story. SCBC comfortably rolled the ball around, playing out from the back and probing the ACJV defence further up the field. Some great pressure from man-mountain Toms Lauskis led to a deserved goal and at 2-1 the game was very much on. The Latvian team did have chances of their own, with a series of corners and free-kicks defended well by SCBC, but the game's 4th goal was scored by Craig Roberts after a goalmouth scramble led to the ball falling at his magical feet, 2-2.
Once the game was levelled up it really could have gone either way and, in truth, a draw would probably have been the fairest result. Unfortunately for SCBC this wasn't to be as, with a handful of minutes left, a defensive error gifted the ball to the Latvians metres from goal. The shot still had to be a cool, calm finish and it was perfectly placed onto the left post before nestling into the back of the net. 3-2 to AC Jules Verne and that's how the game would end, despite SCBC having a couple of late corners which saw them send every man forward (including the goalkeeper).
Everyone who travelled over contributed and there was a debut for George Field, probably the only person ever (or at least for a very long time) to make their SCBC debut in a different country. GG boys. GG. -
