Our final game of the series before the summer break saw us welcome IK Zenith to Hulan on what was the warmest day of the year so far. Zenith came with a strong team of ten players who were to play both Lerum teams, so we anticipated a very tough match and it's fair to say that's exactly what we got.
The first period was extremely difficult for the girls, we weren't really able to play our usual high energy, high pressing style - this was due in part to the very hot weather, but also to the quality of the opponents who were very physical, well organised and dangerous on the counter attack.
We had many half chances under the first period and pressed Zenith back into their own half for most of what seemed like a very long 20 minutes, but were unable to break them down. It came as a relief then when the two birthday girls linked up and Chloe was able to squeeze the ball through to Maya who finished first time past Zenith's goalkeeper. We were glad to get them off the pitch after the first period so they could drink water and try to cool down as best they could, we told the girls to carry on playing the same way - to remain focused and more goals would come. Under the second period the temperature raised both on and off the pitch as some of the Zenith girls became frustrated as we took a 2-0 lead, we started to pass the ball much better using our wide players and Eva's speed with much greater effect. 3-0 then came shortly after, but it was at this point Zenith deservedly came back into the match. We seemed to switch off in defense for a moment during a Zenith attack through the middle and they were able to score with ease. This was followed by another quick attack, but fortunately our goalkeeper, Leia, was ready for them and saved a certain goal by bravely throwing herself at the feet of the Zenith striker. The third period was a bit of a blur, with both teams visibly tiring and we had to make frequent changes, with some of the girls being able to cope with the heat and some understandably finding it too much. When we got to 4-1 we should have been comfortable in being able to see the game out, however, credit has to go to Zenith who kept pressing and managed to score again. Selma, our goalkeeper, made some very important stops at this point and kept her cool during an intense period. Despite this though, we continued to attempt to play football and frequently laid siege to the Zenith goal with both Astrid and then Chloe hitting the crossbar one after the other. Leia had a fantastic run past three players, but just wasn't quite able to finish.
The final whistle couldn't come soon enough, all the girls gave everything they had under the match and we were all extremely proud of the way they stood up to a very tough test today. These are the kinds of games where they'll learn a lot about themselves, both individually and as a team, there's a mental toughness as well as a footballing ability that's starting to shine through and it's obvious to us now how much they've developed over the past few months. A well deserved break now from the series over the summer, but we'll look forward to the autumn fixtures and the further development of a very special team!
