On Saturday morning we traveled to Frölunda to meet IF Väster for the first time in the series, having only previously played them in a cup competition. We knew that they are a good side with some talented players and if we were to perform well today we had to be at our best from the first whistle to the last.
The rain which had threatened to ruin the game beforehand thankfully lessened and all of us who stood and watched and supported the girls were able to enjoy a fantastic match of high quality from both teams. The tempo of the game was set immediately by Chloe and Eva who seemed to shock Väster by their speed, directness and desire to win the ball, this proved to be infectious for the rest of the team as all 9 girls raised their game today and played at their very best. Again, it was our solid back line of Clara L, Hedda and Elsa who were magnificent the whole game not only in their style of play, but also in their decision making at important moments about when to play the ball out from the back, or when to play it long, or to play it into touch. The positions they took up when we didn't have the ball and the communication between the three of them was extremely encouraging and we can see a real partnership developing with whichever two are on the field at the same time.
Because of their hard work our goalkeepers (Leia, Astrid and Elsa) were rarely threatened, however, when they were they all performed very well and Elsa pulled off a great save in the third period after a very good Väster attack. Astrid, Leia and Klara W were all very busy on the flanks and had easily their best games for us, their energy and willingness to never give up backed up with their excellent positional play and passing was very pleasing to see and they gave Väster's back players a tough match.
Both Eva and Maya led the front line with a combination of speed and precision play, the were able to interchange well with one taking the right midfield position and the other the central striker's role, whilst occasionally dropping deeper into midfield. This gave Väster all kinds of problems as the attacks weren't always coming from the same place or player. This was all backed up by our captain for the day, Chloe, who was the engine of the team and covered every centimeter of the pitch, tackling, passing and basically dictating the game from start to finish - a real captain's performance! Now we look forward to our final game before the summer break against Zenit next Saturday, another tough team, but hopefully we'll be able to perform at the same level as today!
